A Guide to Wedding Guest Attire

A Guide to Wedding Guest Attire

Over the past four years, I've helped plan & coordinate weddings for many couples.  While I'm very familiar with how the process works, I've quickly learned that it's a COMPLETELY different story when planning your own wedding.  Being in the bride's seat has given me so much perspective on why couples hire wedding planners.  I currently have a few weddings I'm planning for other couples; I can work on them all in one evening and feel completely calm and organized...then I start working on mine and I'm just over it in 5 minutes.  So much so, that thankfully I have the most amazing wedding planner (who actually brought me into the wedding industry), Michele of Diamond Rings & Pretty Things Wedding Show, who has graciously agreed to help me keep my head on straight. As I've been planning my own wedding though, I keep coming across things that I really didn't know much about before I started planning & coordinating weddings.  One thing in particular I just realized this week when I was working on mine & Christopher's wedding website - wedding dress codes!  I've made two wedding websites now...just can't decide which I like more and want to publish.  When I was working on our Zola website, I came across the part where I had to put in the style of attire we want guests to wear on our wedding day.  That's when I started thinking about before I was a wedding planner and how I really didn't know what kind of clothes were appropriate for each dress code.  I'd literally have to Google it to make sure I was in the clear.

So, here's some clarification for you!

Black Tie

Women: floor length formal gown, knee length cocktail dress, or female tux

Men: tuxedo jacket, tuxedo pants, bow tie, black dress shoes, cummerbund or waistcoat (sometimes optional)

Did you know the main difference between a suit and a tuxedo is the fabric? Suits are typically made with one material, while tuxedos have satin features.
