How He Proposed, Part 1: The Preparation

Friday, June 8, 2018 - my new favorite day ever!  If you read the title then you might've guessed that my boyfriend is now my fiance, and this is our proposal story.  I'll start with his preparation leading up to this magical day. The day after the proposal, Christopher and I woke up and laid in bed for hours as he told me stories and showed me text messages between himself and our jeweler (also his cousin), my family, his family, and some of our friends.  I was blown away with how well this surprise was kept a secret honestly.  He told me that he didn't tell many people until the week before, the day before, or the morning of because he didn't want people holding onto this secret forever and accidentally dropping hints when I was around.  Some of my friends he didn't tell at all because he was so worried!

About three weeks before the engagement, Christopher called my dad.  He had already asked his permission in person some time last year, so this call was just to invite him to the proposal.  He started with telling my dad that he was hosting an event for local band, Trippin Roots, at The Burl in Lexington, KY and extended an invite.  My dad replied that he had a golf tournament that day and would probably be relaxing at home afterwards since they weren't getting done until late in the evening.  So Christopher said, "Rick, I'm proposing to your daughter that night."  Dad immediately got excited and said he and my mom would absolutely be there.

My mom was apparently sitting next to my dad during this conversation and overheard.  She told my dad that she wished she hadn't of heard the conversation because she was not going to be able to keep it a secret.  Throughout the three weeks of waiting, my mom called and texted Christopher many times.  He received her Bitmoji sitting in a backwards chair with text that said "How ya feeling?" as if waiting for some type of exciting response.  She begged and begged for him to let her tell someone and he told her no a handful of times.  Finally, she asked again and he told her that she could tell someone that she knew wouldn't say a word to me.  Her reply..."Great, because I've already told Tyler [my brother], Keith [my uncle/my mom's brother]"...and the list continued.  Christopher said he couldn't do anything but laugh because it was "so my mom."  My dad even told me after the proposal that she had told family friend, Jill, at the pool, and some other good friends of theirs.

Similarly, Christopher had this experience with his mom as well.  She asked multiple times to tell someone and he kept saying no.  Finally, he told her the same thing that he told my mom - she could only tell one person that she knew wouldn't let the secret out around me.  His moms reply, "Great, because I've already told Uncle Butchy [her brother]..." and her list continued as well.  Gotta love our moms and their excitement for us and our future together!  Both were way too ecstatic to keep in a secret this special.

The week before the proposal, my mom asked me if I wanted to get pedicures.  Every other month, we have a mom-daughter pedicure date, so her asking me this was nothing out of ordinary.  What did throw me off a little bit was that she said "Do you need a pedi or mani?"  She has made it clear before that she isn't paying for my acrylic nail fill-ins and she has never asked if I want to get manicures, so I did find that question odd.  However, I didn't think too much of it and I chose pedicure.  I knew I could wait for a fill-in until the following Friday and I really needed a pedicure.  I'm sure she was probably cringing inside when we met for pedicures on Wednesday and she saw my lime green acrylic nails grown out, but it's not like she could exactly press the issue of my nails needing to be good by Friday night. Haha!  Luckily, one popped off and I rushed to the nail salon after work on Friday.  I would've been devastated if my nails had to look like crap in all of the pictures of my hand/ring that were immediately taken after the proposal.

Another obvious hint that I didn't catch onto - we had so many friends who came to The Burl with us.  I think if Christopher wasn't hosting the event for Trippin Roots that I may have caught on a little bit.  I remember going up to our friends Devin and Alex and commenting how awesome it was that somehow they both managed to get off work on a Friday night (because they're always bartending).  Apparently right afterwards, they and another friend of ours, Chris, started worrying that SURELY I knew what was going on now and that they couldn't mention to Christopher that I had made that comment.  They knew it would make him more nervous!

Christopher's nervousness was another hint that I now look back on and realize went way over my head!  Haha!  He used to be in a band where he sang and played guitar in shows every weekend and he's hosted plenty of events before - this was the second event he hosted for Trippin Roots at The Burl.  For some reason though, he seemed unusually nervous all day on Friday.  I asked him multiple times why he was so nervous when he's done this multiple times before and he just kept replying that he's always felt that way at first when going on stage.  I let the issue rest but I have never seen him like that before...probably because he's never been about to propose! Haha!

One of my favorite stories I've heard about the days leading up to the proposal is the one where the secret was almost let out on Facebook live!  Christopher was at our friend Ben & Chelsee's house one evening with a couple other friends.  While he was telling them about the proposal, Chelsee was having herself a fun little time going Facebook live about something else...until they realized you could hear all about the proposal in the background!  Haha!  Thankfully, it was caught and she quickly deleted it.  Glad I was coordinating a wedding that day and not on my phone!

Since our engagement, I've truly enjoyed hearing all of the stories from our family and friends.  Christopher and I are so blessed to have so many people in our lives that care about us and want to to celebrate our love.
