How He Proposed, Part 3: The Bling
About a year and a half ago, Christopher and I started talking about looking at rings...well...me talking...him probably just agreeing so I would stop talking. Haha! One day he finally told me to email him pictures of some rings so he would have an idea of what I like. Easy enough. Maybe an hour later, I found out that he checked his email...mainly because I heard him scream, “HONEYYY, YOU SENT ME 200 EMAILS!” Haha oops? I was indecisive and I liked so many, so I figured all of the pictures would give him plenty of options. Or maybe I just got carried away on Pinterest and didn’t realize it? Either way, Christopher made the decision that we needed to just meet with his cousin, Matt, who is a jeweler at Merkley Kendrick Jewelers in Louisville, KY to design my dream ring. Merkley Kendrick Jewelers is actually the oldest jeweler in Kentucky and the second oldest in the United States...AND still family owned!

Since we were already driving to Louisville for a friends wedding in May 2017, we went ahead and made an appointment to meet with Matt earlier that same day. I was SO excited! However, I picked out and tried on all of the rings that looked similar to ones I had sent Christopher pictures of. Turns out they all looked amazing in pictures but wayyy different when I actually tried them on. My hands are basically child size and I just didn’t end up even liking what I thought I would love.
So I ended up trying on some rings that I probably wouldn’t have picked out in pictures, and it turns out that I actually LOVED them on my hand. Funny how that worked out. I finally narrowed it down to two different rings that I liked. One had a band with alternating diamond and sapphire “steps,” as I call them. I wasn’t too fond of the round diamond in a square setting though. Another ring had a round diamond with corner prongs that I loved, but I wasn’t crazy about the band that was just a little too antique for my taste. So we decided to merge the two!
A little over a year later, my dream ring is finally on my hand! Christopher told me after the engagement that Matt had texted him earlier this year to see if he had changed his mind about marrying me since we had designed the ring so long ago! Haha! Thankfully not! I’m also very thankful that Matt kept all of the notes and my ring size on hand for all that time. It made it much easier for Christopher to finally put the order in and not have to take me somewhere to find out my ring size and what all we had decided on. He was able to continue keeping the proposal a complete secret from me!
While it took over one year from the time we designed my ring until the time Christopher ordered it, I think it was worth the wait! He had been saving up money so that he could pay for it up front and help keep us debt free (minus the home we own) and I had absolutely no idea. I'm so thankful and head over heels for him and I absolutely love my ring. The customization of the ring and inclusion of sapphires make it stand out and the team at Merkley Kendrick couldn't have done a more perfect job!
